Writing an article in the Global Times, Yang Shen writes that India’s recent acts, remarks over China’s Zangnan ‘serve election purpose’ and that “consequence of sparking military conflict in border region is too grave for New Delhi.”
There is a long-standing border dispute between China and India over the region of Arunachal Pradesh, which China calls Zangnan. Recently, tensions have flared up again after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the region and China accused India of taking actions that complicate the border issue.
However, Chinese analysts believe that India’s tough stance is likely aimed at winning re-election for Modi rather than sparking a military conflict. They point out that India’s recent actions haven’t significantly changed the status quo and that both sides are well aware of each other’s positions. While China remains cautious and prepared for any provocation, they believe India is more interested in political posturing than actual conflict.
